It is a diagram that two astronomers, Mr Hertzsprung and Mr Russell (thus HR diagram!!), each came up with independently, when they decided to graph the temperature of a star vs. its brightness or luminosity. They noticed patterns which end up being related to the age or life of a star. Remember temperature is related to color.
